Primary Classification of Survey
1. Geodetic surveying.
2. Plane surveying.
Geodetic surveying.
In this Surveying the curvature of the earth is taken into consideration. Geodetic surveying extended over a large area. In this surveying the line joining any two points is considered as a curved line.
Plane surveying.
In this surveying the curvature of the earth is not taken into consideration because plane surveying is carried out over a small area.
In such surveying a line joining any two points is considered to be straight.
Secondary Classification of Survey
i) Based on methods.
a. Triangulation surveying.
b. Traverse surveying.
ii) Based on instruments.
a. Chain surveying.
b. Compass surveying.
c. Plane table surveying.
d. Theodolite surveying.
e. Tacheometric surveying.
f. Photographic surveying.
iii) Based on object.
a. Geological surveying.
b. Archaeological surveying.
c. Mine surveying.
d. Military surveying.
iv) Based on nature of field.
a. Land surveying.
b. Marine surveying.
c. Astronomical surveying.
Land surveying is divided following classes.
1. Topographical surveying.
To determine natural features of a country.
2. Cadastral surveying.
to determine the boundaries of fields, houses, etc.
3. City surveying.
To determine the premises, streets, water supply and sanitary system, etc.
4. Engineering surveying.
It is done to prepare detailed drawings of projects i.e road projects, railways etc.
